cant comment on the top speed, but I can say they will stand up on end when you nail em, seen it done! really pretty neat to see! I would GUESS (JUST a guess) that they ought to hit 80 at least., maybe even higher :D

A lot depends on the gearing. My 340 st would do 80 on hard pack across a lake. Even today it more than holds it's own in sprints againest sleds with more cc's
:DAl

I talked to guy who did 96 mph at a radar run on the Welland canal in '91 on a '75 440 s/t. Beat a 650 wildcat by 1 mph. Jeff

I know a stock 440f/a will hit 80+ in 660ft on the ice, so geared right 100mph is believable.

don't know about a f/a, but I seen a '76 s/t l/c at a radar run, in a 1000' he did 107mph!!! made a lot of money betting on him!!, and yes, I have a '76 340 t/t and it does 83 with me on @ 220lbs!
this 440 l/c, pulls the skis almost 16" in the air for a good 90' too! one rockin' little unit!!, he wouldn't tell me it he had any mod work done, but judging by the way it sounded with the race pipes, it seemed to rev forever, at least more than 9000 rpm, don't know if that's possible though, and his fuel smelled funny...

Although not a Mercury, my stock Kohler RS powered Rupp F/A 440 runs 74mph in 500ft (electronic speed trap) and my 340 Rupp F/A runs 71-72mph in the same 500 ft.
