Just looking at a 76 ST 340 that I picked up and the motor tag reads M340 2RLC instead of the normal K340-2RLC. Does this signify anything different about the motor? Havevn't seen a Kohler motor that didn't begin with a K.

John, consider yourself lucky...you have an original Merc 76 S/T engine. Merc engineers sent porting specs to Kohler to have their engines manufactured to Merc specs...not Kohlers. The designator was "M" for Mercury Kohler...rather than the "K" for standard Kohler engines. That's why a M250RLC will blow away any Arctic-Cat "Z"-250 that used a Kohler "K250" engine. All MERC RLC's started with "M", used a different ignition, different pully sizes & bellhousing (along with the aforementioned different Cyl's & heads). You're in good shape!!!
