This weekend im going to start tearing apart this thing... Im pretty excited, mainly because we actually have a decent amount of snow!

Anyway, what im wondering about is this. The machine was last run about 10-15 years ago, and it was run regulary since it was new...

im just wondering if I should let go of my dreams of having an operational machine this weekend, and go ahead and take the motor out to redo the crank seals? Is there anyway to inspect them to see if they need attention? I have access to a full service shop that deals with a lot of small 2 cycle engines, so i have some test equipment.

Wheres the best place to get parts?

Hers a few pics of my machine, this is how it sits in storage except with a cover on it.

tough call. they could be fine and cause no issues, or they could let go and you lose the motor. what you could do is start it, get it warm, and spray some carb cleaner in the seals. if the idle races then the seal is bad and sucking the carb cleaner in and burning it. if nothing happens, they MIGHT be good and you could run it problem free. the thing is, they could let go at any time. I am running my 76 trail twister with a full set of new gaskets. while I have new crank seals I still have not put them in because they seem and act ok after testing. but, I know that I am risking it and am willing to do so. it is really up to you! good luck either way, and nice sled!

Thanks Eric.. I ended up getting the machine running and it runs great! Pretty amazing machine these things are.. some new fuel hoses and some fresh 25:1 and it was back! It was my uncle's machine and he drove it and said he thought it ran every bit as good as it did brand new. Pretty amazing, i got it running and 25-30mins of careful riding the thing was back running 80MPH across the lake :)

Im sorta thinking that how well the machine idles and runs that its not a huge pressing issue. The indication I got is if they were shot the motor would run like crap or not run at all...

I think what im going to do is think about taking everything apart this summer, but ill probably just enjoy it for the next month or so we have snow....
