340 / 440 l/c motor identification

Are there serial numbers or some other identification that would reveal if a motor is a 340 or a 440?? (Sorry if this is a stupid question.)

The jugs and heads had the Kohler Part number cast into the part. On the head it was a circular number around the spark plug hole. On the "jugs" it was cast into the mount near the ears.

I don't have the numbers right here. From memory I believe the 440 stuff starts with the number 44.
