After a lot of research and measurements, I figured out why the compression was so high. The main reason was the wrong head gasket being installed. I have no idea what head gasket it was for, but it wasn't for a 440/22. Just measuring where it was obviously compressed showed it to be sticking into t...

Can someone with this option on their 440 max tell me the number of positions on the ignition switch? I see "generic" ignition switches that will fit that have 3 positions (off, run, and start). I also see other switches with 4 positions, (im guessing off, run, run / lights, and start.) Wh...

Put the 3 bolt puller back on and tension it up. Get a hammer and hit the end of the forcing bolt on the puller (the part you turn with a wrench to tighten it up)...do NOT hammer on the flywheel. One or two hits with a hammer and it will "pop" right off.

On to the details... Compression readings... Cylinder 1 185 psi Cylinder 2 185 psi Is this normal for th...

The Merc 440 Max originally was supposed to have a Salsbury clutch (best I can tell from the literature I have), however the sled I am working on restoring has a Comet 102c put on in its place. Its a very long detective trail and to make a long story short, I am not sure that this particular 102c ha...

Well some good news... :) Basics that most of you probably know already, but as I stated before, this is my first sled so bear with me. Verified the engine as being a CCW Kioritz 440/22 which I believe is correct for this year sled. The engine serial number does not match the sled serial number. I d...

Hello all! I am a new owner of a 1974 Merc 440 Max...The price was right, but its not running, so I figured the least I could do is to make a good attempt at restoring it to its former glory. Its not a basket case by any means, but it certainly wont win any contests in its current state. First thing...
